Our Founder

Founder and President of M.A. Angeliades, Merkourios Angeliades, known as Mike, was born on November 20, 1941 in Symi, Greece. He came to the United States in 1960 to pursue a better life for himself and his family back home. After working at different factory and construction jobs, he founded his first company, ANT Construction. ANT did mostly home improvements and restaurant renovations. In 1969 Mike founded Magnetic Construction Corp., which was responsible for building more than 200 restaurants, as well as doing both city and state projects. Over the following two decades, Mike founded several other construction companies, including Hudson Meridien and Algonquin.

His namesake organization, M.A. Angeliades, was founded in 1991, providing construction management and building design for projects in both the public and private sectors. Over the last two decades, M.A. Angeliades has become synonymous with best practices in construction and building design management.

His business genius also spearheaded the founding or acquisition of other businesses, such as Washington Square Realty, LLC, the Dairy Barn store group (in 38 locations), Kyma Restaurant and two property holdings for future development, one in Stamford, CT and the other in Beacon, NY.

Most recently, Mike has expanded into real estate development nationally and internationally, and has re-focused his energy on private sector projects that also contribute to the communities that surround them, support local economies, and represent his strong personal interest and passion for these specific projects. Two of its most significant development projects are: The Chase Tower in South Bend, Indiana through his Washington Square Development LLC; and Afandou North Golf on the Island of Rhodes, Greece with M.A. Angeliades.

Mike had ambition, determination and an extraordinary work ethic, all of which contributed to his vast success in business. Mike also attributes his success to his unwavering faith. In addition to his business accomplishments, he has always been committed to civic, community and philanthropic endeavors. He is extremely proud of his heritage, and is very involved in the Greek community. He is one of the major benefactors of many churches in Symi. In 1982 he was one of the original founders of the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Roslyn, NY. In 2010 the Church embarked on a capital campaign to build a new church in Port Washington, NY. Mike committed his resources and financial support to this undertaking. The church fellowship has been dedicated to his mother-in-law, Argiro Maris, and the narfex was named in memory of his mother, Fotene Angeliades.

He is a member of the AHEPA Gold Coast Chapter, Leadership 100 and a member of FAITH, an endowment for Orthodoxy and Hellenism. In 2012 he was honored by the Hellenic Medical Society of NY and awarded the Distinguished Hellene 2012 award. One of the greatest honors bestowed on a layman of the Greek Church, and one of the most sobering responsibilities which an Orthodox communicant can assume, is to be named an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle. This honor was bestowed on Mike in 2013.

A wonderful son, son-in-law, brother, husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law, Mike has been married to Libby for forty-five years. They reside in Sands Point, NY. They have four daughters, Phaedra, married to Manny Kazanas; Aegina; Irena; and Ilana, married to Sean Maguire; and five granddaughters, Melina, Anastasia, Sophia, Electra and Athena.
